Purpose

The purpose of the Informed and Engaged Public work group is to inspire and empower the public to appreciate, value, and protect Long Island Sound and the waters that flow into the Sound.

Objectives

  • Increase public access and sense of belonging
  • Improve and expand the environmental literacy of people interacting with the Sound
  • Foster stewardship and practices that protect and conserve Long Island Sound

Goals

  • Connect people living in the Long Island Sound watershed to the Long Island Sound estuary through communications, outreach, and engagement to improve environmental awareness, knowledge, stewardship, and access to the local environment. 
  • Inform the public about the health of Long Island Sound and the work of the long island sound partnership and its partners to restore and protect Long Island Sound.
  • Engage citizens to join in efforts to restore and protect the Sound, through individual behavior change that leads to improved environmental practices, and volunteering in outreach, citizen science, and habitat restoration projects.

WORK GROUP FOCUS

The Informed and Engaged Public Work Group supports the goals of the CCMP by working to increase public appreciation of the Sound through communication, outreach, and engagement. The group focuses on building environmental awareness, strengthening stewardship, and expanding access to the clean, healthy waters of the estuary and its watershed.
