Pulling Invasives

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection fisheries scientist Steve Gephard (right) lent boats and staff last month to the effort to remove invasive water chestnut (Trapa natans) from an inlet north of Salmon Cove in the Connecticut River Estuary on Monday. Also helping were Margot Burns of the Connecticut River Council of Governments (RiverCOG) and Judy Preston of Connecticut Sea Grant/Long Island Sound Partnership. Left unchecked, this area could easily be filled in and choke important native underwater vegetation that is critical to spawning and resident fish. Credit: Judy Preston.
